LP 22 – Rice with Mung Beans Dessert
I have been wanting to try out this dish ever since the English Patis posted the recipe on her website and then put the photo of it on her header, reminding me to make it every time I visited her food blog. This dish, in the Philippines, is called Ginataang Totong or Totong Balatong. Ginataan means it is cooked with coconut milk.My husband loves rice, but sometimes he looks at me aghast how I can eat rice three meals a day, for snacks and also for dessert. I love sweet rice! What can I say. And there is something about the pairing of rice and coconut milk that is just sublime. So after making Mung Bean Soup not too long ago, I still had some mung (mongo) beans left so one … Read entire article »

Roasted Leg of Lamb
We eat so much chicken that some days we just can’t stand even the thought of chicken! So enter lamb. Costco has started selling these boneless lamb legs for a very reasonable price so we decided to get one for a change.I actually cooked this towards the end of the summer when we still have lots of herbs from the garden, so it was deliciously infused with aromatic goodness. However, if you would like to try making this for Christmas or New Year, I don’t see any reason why you couldn’t substitute dried herbs instead. … Read entire article »

Pearl Tapioca Pudding with Coconut Cream
The girls have been into bobas or pearl tea drinks lately so they’ve been having me cook pearl pearls for their concoctions. I had cooked a little too much tapioca pearls for their needs one time so rather than having them sit in the refrigerator, I decided to make tapioca pudding. But since they are not the usual dainty little pearls normally used for tapioca pudding, I decided to change it up even more.First though, here is how I’ve been boiling tapioca pearls. You can buy tapioca pearls at most Asian market. Don’t get the pre-cooked or ones that claim to be ready in five minutes. I don’t know about you, but I haven’t had a good experience with those. They usually turn to glue. So here goes how to … Read entire article »

Lasang Pinoy 22: Rice to the Challenge!
Lasang Pinoy is a monthly blogging event that promotes Filipino cuisine and I am honored to host this month’s event. The theme I have chosen is RICE! We have gone through 21 months of Lasang Pinoy and we’ve covered a spectrum of Filipino dishes. Every one of those dishes, if you notice, always paired well with rice. See if you can count how many recipes end with ‘serve over rice’ or ‘serve with lots of steamed rice’. I lost count. Rice is a huge part of Filipino cuisine So I thought isn’t it time to highlight rice? Rice is woven so tightly into the Filipino palate that it is often taken for granted. It is simply assumed that you will have rice with your meal. It is never the center of … Read entire article »

Beef and Bitter Melon Stirfry
I had one bittermelon plant come in our garden this summer. One! Out of a whole pack. But, it was ok. I’ll stop whining about it now because if I had more than one, I’d have bittermelon coming out of my ears. As it was, I’ve had bittermelon every kind of ways and by the end of the summer, as much as I love bittermelon, I was frankly getting tired of it. The last two fruits, I didn’t even bother getting off the vine, I just left them there to go to seed. Anyway, this is one of my last bittermelon variations. … Read entire article »
