Avocado Chiller

Some people find it strange that I treat avocado more as a dessert than as a vegetable to garnish salads. Growing up in the Philippines, we always had avocado for dessert. It is commonly mixed with sugar and milk, and with a bit of ice, it becomes a refreshing snack or dessert.

One of the simplest ways of consuming avocado came from my grandmother and it’s a favorite of mine when I need something quick and refreshing to snack on. All you have to do is cut an avocado in half and remove the pit. In the hollow of the fruit, put a teaspoon of sugar then squeeze lime juice on it, then simply scoop out a spoonful of avocado taking a bit of sugar and lime on it and you’re immediately transported to a refreshed state. For me, I am again transported to my childhood, my grandmother’s back porch with a hot summer breeze blowing and the sweetness and simplicity abound.

To most of my non-Asian friends, having avocado as a sweet treat is strange. Here in the U.S., avocadoes are typically used in salads, guacamole dip, or put in sandwiches. No one would ever think of avocado for dessert, although I have seen some cupcakes with avocado frosting that I have been meaning to try out.

Avocado Shake

My daughter made this avocado ‘shake’ one day when we found some avocados on sale at the grocery store. All she did is cut the avocado into cubes and put them in a blender with ice, sugar and milk. You’ll have to adjust the amount of sugar to your taste. Blend the mixture just enough to mix, and you have a refreshing drink

Avocado smoothies make a great one-glass breakfast. Plus, if you freeze them, you get a scrumptious avocado sorbet. 😀

It goes both ways I guess. They must think it’s also strange the things we do with avocado!

When we’re in a hurry, we simply slice the avocado open, remove the seed, then sprinkle sugar and pour some milk and spoon out the avocado from there.

I also love avocadoes on california maki.
