Lettuce Wrapped Chicken
This is an update to an old recipe which is a favorite in our house especially once the weather starts getting too hot to cook inside or out. It hasn’t got that hot yet though, the weather has been still pleasantly comfortable. Yet whenever I try to think of something light, refreshing and still filling, this recipe comes to mind. My husband does not bother with the lettuce cups or lettuce tacos as he calls it. … Read entire article »
Corn & Egg Drop Soup
This is the accompanying soup when I made the Chinese braised ribs last week when the Clone was sick. This was all she had of that meal which was a good thing because her dad just about devoured all the ribs! Anyway, this is a very simple recipe and all you really need is a good, flavorful chicken broth. Luckily, I had plenty of homemade frozen chicken broth. Of course, a good canned broth will work … Read entire article »
Chinese Braised Ribs
My photographic skills do not do these ribs justice but my husband declared them the best Chinese braised ribs, even better than any he’s ever had in a restaurant! Now that’s some endorsement and he lived up to it by eating almost half the pot by himself I liked it because, well, it was delicious if I do say so myself! But I liked it the most because of how easy it is to … Read entire article »
Bunny Baos
Did you have a good Easter Sunday? It was another excuse to feast for us, so we ended up having a cooking weekend. My daughter Asi had a couple of friends over last Saturday. They were going to go on a picnic to celebrate her birthday which is next weekend, but it rained pretty hard on Friday night and we just knew the park was going to be too soggy to have a picnic. Instead, we stayed home and cooked, and at and cooked and ate some more. One of the things we cooked up were these steamed buns (siopao or sieu bao). I made steamed pork buns before (siopao adobo) and it’s always a hit with the girls. When I came across these bunny shaped baos from Just Hungry, I … Read entire article »
Shrimp Dumplings
I was so glad to finally see a challenge that I was familiar with. This month’s challenge for Recipes to Rival is shrimp dumplings! No big deal, right? WRONG! We’ve made potstickers, shumai and eggrolls, sure. But have we ever made our own wrappers? That’s where the challenge comes in. This was the first time we’ve ever made our own wrappers and it was fun and challenging and even exasperating at times. … Read entire article »

Easy Wonton Soup
Summer and soups almost don’t seem to go together, but they do in this case. One, this is perfect for hot summer nights because it’s easy to prepare and doesn’t take a long time to cook, thus keeping the kitchen cool. It’s light enough for when it’s just so hot you don’t want to move but still filling enough to keep you satisfied. Lastly, and most people who live in hot tropical climes will tell you this same thing, is that when you eat something hot, you sweat thus cooling off your body! Yeah, I have a hard time convincing my kids on the last point, but this soup is so delicious they just take my word for it. First off on the easy part, it helps if you have some … Read entire article »

Beef with Broccoli Stirfry
When I cooked the Beef with Bittermelon Stirfy, I had to cook something else that the girls would eat. So this one, I cooked exactly the same way as the bittermelon stirfy but with different vegetables. … Read entire article »

Clams with Black Bean Sauce
This is one of my favorite ways of cooking clams, and whenever I go to a Chinese restaurant that offers this, I never fail to order it. These clams, I found at Costco. Asi is my only daughter who shares this dish with me. She loves to put the sauce over her rice. When she and I are hungry, we can put away a whole order of this dish. … Read entire article »
